Description

Indian Overseas Bank is a nationalised scheduled commercial bank—a full-service public-sector lender that takes deposits, extends retail, farm, MSME and corporate credit, and runs a historic overseas book from one regulated balance sheet. It is not a payments wallet, a local cooperative, or a single-country correspondent. Customers who bank in a domestic branch, use the bank’s digital channels, or deal through an overseas office are dealing with the same legal entity that answers to the Reserve Bank of India and discloses results as a listed PSU bank. The house was founded on 10 February 1937 by M. Ct. M. Chidambaram Chettyar. The original geography was deliberate: Karaikudi, Chennai, and Rangoon were part of the opening design, which is why IOB’s identity has always included a Chettiar-trade and overseas-Burma thread rather than a purely domestic south-Indian savings bank. Nationalisation in 1969 brought the bank into public ownership along with other major commercial banks. The overseas map that remains part of official description includes Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Sri Lanka—points that support trade, NRI, and regional flows rather than a consumer app story. Domestic banking is still the core: savings and current accounts, deposits, housing and personal credit, agriculture and priority-sector books, MSME working capital, corporate and trade finance, government business, and cards and UPI on the core account. Digital channels are delivery layers on that franchise. Official social destinations—Facebook at IOBIndia.in, X at @iobindia, Instagram at @iobindia, Threads at @iobindia, LinkedIn at /company/indian-overseas-bank, and YouTube at /c/IndianOverseasBankOfficial—are brand and public-information surfaces. They carry campaigns, results headlines, overseas-network colour, and security films. They are not login pages, not NRI helpdesks, and not places to complete KYC. Impersonation of overseas-facing PSU brands is common; treat any message that asks for remote access, Aadhaar images, or payment to a personal account as fraud. Branch locators, overseas-office lists, tariff sheets, and quarterly numbers belong on the bank’s website and in exchange filings. English is the language of these listings; Tamil, Hindi, and other regional creative appear in consumer campaigns. Country is India. Follow only the official handles named here. Confirm every commercial claim on the bank’s own site, then treat social posts as communication from the 1937 Chidambaram Chettyar bank—opened across Karaikudi, Chennai, and Rangoon, nationalised in 1969—whose present franchise is a domestic public-sector book plus overseas points in Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.
