Jindal Steel
BusinessJindal Steel, formerly Jindal Steel & Power, is one of India’s foremost integrated steel producers. The company is organised around a mine-to-metal model: captive mineral and energy resources, large-scale manufacturing, and a distribution network that carries finished steel from Indian plants into domestic projects and export markets. Its public vision—Building Nations. Empowering Communities.—treats steel as civic material as well as industrial output, the stuff of bridges, rail corridors, factories, and housing rather than a commodity sold only on price. The investment footprint exceeds USD 12 billion. Core mills sit at Angul in Odisha, Raigarh in Chhattisgarh, and Patratu in Jharkhand, with further operations in India and Africa. Angul has become both the flagship integrated works and an in-house process laboratory, pairing ironmaking and rolling with captive power and mining so that feedstock, energy, and finishing sit on one platform. That vertical span is meant to keep cost, quality, and fuel security inside the producer’s control instead of depending on imported intermediates at every step. Process choices distinguish the group as much as geography. Jindal Steel built India’s first syngas-based coal-gasification plant for iron and steel, using domestically available coal to make synthesis gas for direct reduced iron and, later, for other mill duties when natural gas and other imported fuels were tight. Downstream, it runs a modern hot-strip mill rated at 6 million tonnes a year and has developed finishing lines that few private Indian peers match in combination: rails for the national network, unusually wide plate offered in coil, and fabricated steel structures ready for erection. Those products matter to infrastructure owners who need long rails, heavy plate, and shop-built members, not only commodity coils. The commercial book is aimed at infrastructure, construction, and manufacturing. Mining and captive power sit behind the mills so energy and raw materials are treated as part of steelmaking. Sustainability and inclusive growth appear in the same story: lower-emission process routes, plant-town livelihoods, and a claim that industrial scale should leave host regions stronger. For customers and observers, Jindal Steel is a vertically integrated Indian steel group that owns mines, power, and specialised finishing—and is willing to run coal gasification at industrial scale—rather than a single-product mill competing only on spot prices.
