Coal India 

Coal India Limited is the Government of India–owned Maharatna that was incorporated in November 1975 to bring the country’s nationalised coalfields under one holding company, and it remains the world’s largest coal producer by output. The group reports 212,066 employees as of 1 April 2026 and operates about 295 mines across subsidiaries that still carry the old field names: ECL, BCCL, CCL, NCL, WCL, SECL, MCL, and the planning and research arms. Those mines run from deep underground workings in the east to some of the largest open-cast pits on the continent. Gevra, in SECL’s Korba coalfield, is routinely described as Asia’s largest open-cast mine and is the visual that outsiders remember: draglines, shovel-dumper fleets, and a pit that feeds pit-head power stations. In FY26 the company produced 768.19 million tonnes, a volume that still underwrites most of India’s thermal generation and a large share of its steel-making coal blend. The commercial identity is bulk commodity and public-service, not consumer retail. CIL sells to NTPC and state gencos, to sponge-iron and cement plants, and through e-auctions and linkages that are governed by ministry policy as much as by a sales brochure. Pricing, grade, and rake availability matter more than a viral reel. As a Maharatna it has board-level freedom on investment, but ownership and social licence sit with the Union government and with the states that host the coalfields. Just transition, land, and air-quality debates travel with every expansion proposal; the company answers them in annual reports, parliamentary questions, and statutory clearances, not in a reply box.
