Transport Corporation of India Limited, known as TCI Group, is a listed Indian logistics and supply-chain company that moves about two percent of India’s GDP by value of cargo each year. From TCI House at 69 Institutional Area, Sector 32, Gurugram, it designs end-to-end movement for shippers who need more than a single truck: road freight, contract supply chain, warehousing, coastal shipping, cold chain, multimodal rail-and-road, and programmes built for aviation and defence, automotive plants, retail and consumer goods, chemicals and pharma, hi-tech and telecom, renewables, and engineering and electrical cargo. The story starts small and stays operational. TCI was founded in 1958 in Calcutta with one man, one truck, and one office. It became a private limited company in 1965, introduced computers in a branch as early as 1968, converted to a public limited company in 1974, and offered shares to the public in 1982. Coastal work began in 1985 with the first two ships. Express capability followed in the 1990s: XPS in 1996, XPS air in 1998, and Transystem, a joint venture with Mitsui of Japan for automobile logistics, in 1999. The Indian Road Freight Index arrived in 2000 as a market reference. XPS Global opened international freight forwarding and single-window clearances in 2002, XPS courier reached homes in 2005, and group turnover crossed Rs 1,000 crore in 2006. Later decades added a wider country map, a dedicated cold-chain warehouse, Bangladesh operations, and a larger coastal fleet rather than a longer list of slogans. The operating family now includes TCI Freight for less-than-truckload and full-truckload, TCI Supply Chain Solutions for 3PL and 4PL control-tower work, TCI Seaways for coastal vessels, TCI Cold Chain for reefer storage and transport, TCI CONCOR for multimodal rail, Transystem for auto inbound and outbound, TCI Express as the listed express cousin, TCI Developers for logistics parks and warehouses, and country units in Bangladesh, Nepal, and the Middle East. More than four thousand people work through some 1,400 IT-enabled offices. Service lines also cover port and EXIM, customs house agency, liquid and gas bulk, over-dimensional cargo, and SAARC corridors. Public-interest work sits beside the commercial network. During COVID-19 the group helped move liquid medical oxygen and supported large vaccination logistics. It reports under BRSR, launched the TCI–IIM Bangalore Supply Chain Sustainability Lab, marked twenty-five years of the Transystem joint venture, connected B2B logistics services to ONDC, and saw the TEMT tool adopted and hosted by DPIIT. Trade magazines Logistics Focus and Enroute share practice notes with the wider industry. After more than sixty years, TCI is still organised around multimodal cargo rather than a single mode, and still run from Gurugram for customers who want one relationship across road, rail, sea, warehouse, and temperature-controlled lanes.
