Description

City Union Bank is a scheduled commercial bank that began life as The Kumbakonam Bank Limited on 31 October 1904, when twenty citizens of Kumbakonam signed the first memorandum and T. S. Raghavachariar became the first Agent, and a full-service lender whose core work is deposit-taking, credit, foreign exchange, and everyday payments. It is not a payments wallet, not a chit fund, and not a single-district cooperative. A customer who opens a savings account in the Cauvery delta or a current account in Bengaluru is still dealing with the same legal entity that grew from a regional house into a listed commercial bank. The early map was local and then slowly national. The first branch outside the home town opened at Mannargudi on 24 January 1930. Later decades added Nagapattinam, Sannanallur, Ayyampet, Tirukattupalli, Tiruvarur, Manapparai, Mayuram, and Porayar. The bank entered the Second Schedule of the Reserve Bank of India Act in 1945, marked a Golden Jubilee in 1954, and took over Common Wealth Bank Limited in 1957. In April 1965 The City Forward Bank Limited and The Union Bank Limited amalgamated into the house, which then traded as The Kumbakonam City Union Bank Limited. Madras received a branch the same year. From 1968 to 1973 branch expansion under O. R. Srinivasan filled more Tamil Nadu towns. The first branch outside the state opened at Sultanpet, Bangalore, in September 1980, with Hyderabad and Secunderabad following. The present name, City Union Bank Limited, took effect in December 1987. Capability layered on top of that geography. A staff training college opened at Kumbakonam in 1989. An authorised-dealer licence for foreign-exchange business arrived in 1990. Computerisation and a Tata Consultancy Services core-banking programme brought branches onto one ledger. Later services include ATMs, insurance distribution, export-credit insurance marketing, money-transfer arrangements, and depository-participant work under the National Securities Depository framework. Centenary events began in 2003. Leadership names the bank still records include V. Narayanan, S. Balasubramanian, and N. Kamakodi. The public line is “A distinct bank for all your needs. Anywhere... Anytime...” Personal and business banking, customer care, and digital access sit on the corporate site. Official social destinations—Facebook at CityUnionBankLtd, X at cubltd, Instagram at cubltd, and YouTube channel UCi0jVeuQSBBvgvIA7vox6gg—are brand and public-information channels.
